COVID-19 was ravaging through many parts of Nepal in late Spring of 2021 and there was a crisis unfolding in many localities. TFA jumped into action by announcing fund raiser campaigns. There were two separate efforts:
The first effort was by Tharus living in Santa Fe, New Mexico who raised $1,551 and donated on behalf of Tharus and Friends Association to Hamar Foundation in western Nepal on May 15, 2021. COVID-19 was in peak in western Nepal at the time exacerbated by a huge shortage of oxygen. People were dying at hospitals due to lack of oxygen. Hamar Foundation collaborated with Humanity Foundation Nepal and established an Oxygen Cylinder Bank (244 cylinders) in Dhangadhi. They distributed oxygen cylinders with oxygen to hospitals and people in need free of charge. TFA expresses gratitude to all the donors, especially Tharus of Santa Fe for taking charge that saved many lives.
The second effort was lead by the executive committee, which was wide ranging and TFA friends and well-wishers from USA, Canada, Singapore and Nepal once again came through and donated generously. TFA was able to raise a total of $3664.97 in June 2021. After evaluating proposals/requests at hand, TFA funded the following four organizations with NRs. 100,000.00 each to carry out the COVID-19 relief work:
- Backward Society Education (BASE), Western Nepal
- Khadag Municipality Ward No. 6, Saptari District
- Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha (TKS) Central Office, Kathmandu
- Tharu Mahila Sabha, Bara and Siraha Districts
